History
La Porte was originally known as Rabbit Creek. In 1857, it was renamed for
La Porte, Indiana. Hydraulic mining was done extensively in La Porte from the 1850s to the 1880s, and produced more gold than most other areas of California. Some mining activity continued until World War I. Several fires in the late 19th century burned down most of the oldest buildings in La Porte.
