Lions Clubs International is the world's largest secular service organization. Its motto is "Lions helping Lions serve the world." Founded in 1917, it is headquartered in
Oak Brook, Illinois, and comprises approximately 44,500 clubs in 203 countries, with over 1.3 million members.
Membership is by invitation only, although dedicated individuals are rarely turned away. Attendance at meetings is expected on a monthly or
fortnightly basis. Women have been allowed to join Lions Clubs only since 1988.
Affiliated Organizations
LEO Clubs are for youth ages 12 to 28. The name LEO stands for "Leadership, Experience, Opportunity." Every LEO Club must declare itself as either an Alpha LEO Club (ages 12 to 18) or an Omega LEO Club (ages 18 to 28). There are more than 5,500 LEO Clubs in more than 130 countries, with approximately 140,000 members.
Campus Lions Clubs are for college students. There are more than 125 Campus Lions Clubs in 28 countries, with nearly 2,500 members.
