Plumas Lake is an unincorporated, master-planned exurb in Yuba County. It is located on the north bank of the Bear River (opposite Rio Oso) and near the east bank of the Feather River (opposite Tudor), south of Arboga and Olivehurst, and west of Wheatland. It contains an estimated 12,000 homes.

History

Plumas Lake's construction began early in 2003, when housing prices throughout California were artificially inflated to a tremendous degree. As a result, after the Housing Market Crash, virtually all residents have ended up owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

Plumas Lake is named after what it used to be: the bottom of a lake. Many agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, opposed creating the town of Plumas Lake due to the history of severe flooding in the area. Hydrauling mining in the Yuba River in northeastern Yuba County during the Gold Rush caused mine tailings to fall into the river, raising the riverbed and increasing flood risks downstream. During the floods of 1986 and 1997, there was as much as 15 feet or more of standing water in places where Plumas Lake houses now stand.
